ESOL LAUNCHES ALTERNATIVE FEB BREAK IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC! 

19 ESOL students, along with Professor Barnett, Coach Hathorn, and Professor Mayock, will embark upon a one-week service trip to the San Diego Padresf baseball academy in Najayo (Dominican Republic) for the week of February break (February 14-21), 2009.  The trip is co-sponsored by the San Diego Padres and Washington and Lee University.

The group will work with baseball players and elementary school students from Najayofs Escuela La Playa to address their English-language needs, such as travel, business, food, daily conversations, and culture.  In addition, the group will complete other service projects (e.g. building, clean-up) as needed.

WORKSHOPS TO PREPARE TEACHING MATERIALS:  Students will meet on Sundays:  January 11, 18, 25, and February 1 and 8,  1-3pm.   Elrod Commons 116.  These meetings are mandatory.

*One of the Sunday meetings will consist of a health and safety orientation for the trip. 

 

VISIT OF JULIO RODRIGUEZ, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF SOCIOLOGY AT RANDOLPH COLLEGE:  Sunday, January 25, 12-2:30 p.m.  Professor Rodriguez will meet with the group to discuss sports culture in the United States and masculinity issues in the Dominican Republic.  Students will work on teaching materials from 12-1 and then meet with Professor Rodriguez from 1-2 or 1-2:30.

 

BASEBALL MITTS AND BALLS:  If you have gently-used baseball mitts or balls, please let us know.  We would like to have each traveler bring at least one mitt to donate to the Najayo community.
